Standard pallet sizes work for most freight, but when your product sits outside those dimensions, a custom pallet is the difference between a safe shipment and a damage claim.

What Makes a Pallet Custom
A custom pallet is any pallet built to specifications that fall outside standard sizes and configurations. That can mean:
Non-standard dimensions. Your product is 52 inches long and the longest standard pallet is 48 inches. A custom pallet cut to 54 inches gives you the overhang you need for stable strapping without tipping.
Higher load capacity. Standard GMA pallets carry up to about 2,500 pounds dynamically. If your freight weighs 4,000 pounds, you need thicker stringers, closer deck board spacing, and possibly reinforced corners. We calculate the load rating based on your actual weight and stack pattern.
Specialized materials. Some applications call for hardwood instead of pine, or for kiln-dried lumber to meet moisture specifications. Export shipments to certain countries require ISPM-15 heat-treated lumber — we build custom pallets that meet that standard and stamp them for compliance.
Unique configurations. Two-way entry vs. four-way entry, winged decks for stretch wrap, notched stringers for nesting, or recessed decks for forklift clearance — these are all specs we build to when a standard pallet will not work.
Why Custom Pallets Cost More (and When It Is Worth It)
Custom pallets run more per unit than standard sizes. The reason is setup: each custom order requires a separate cut list, jig configuration, and quality check. Standard 48x40s run in high volume with optimized material yield — custom orders sacrifice some of that efficiency.
But the cost of a custom pallet is almost always lower than the cost of shipping damage. A pallet that is too small for your load shifts in transit. A pallet rated for 2,000 pounds that carries 3,500 cracks under the load. Both scenarios end with freight damage claims, rejected deliveries, and customer complaints.
Custom pallets make sense when:
- Your freight dimensions exceed standard pallet sizes
- Your load weight exceeds standard pallet capacity ratings
- You ship internationally and need ISPM-15 compliant heat-treated pallets
- A customer or carrier specifies exact pallet requirements in their shipping guidelines
- You need consistent pallet specs across a recurring production run
For one-off shipments, a custom pallet may seem like overkill. But for recurring freight or high-value loads, the per-pallet premium pays for itself in avoided damage.
Our Manufacturing Process

Spec consultation. You tell us the dimensions, load weight, entry type, and any compliance requirements. If you have a product sample or drawing, we use it. If not, we ask the right questions — how is it loaded, how is it stored, how is it shipped.

Design and quote. We produce a cut list and provide a per-pallet quote based on materials, labor, and quantity. For larger runs, we can often optimize material yield to bring the unit cost down.

Manufacturing. We cut, assemble, and fasten each pallet on our production line. Our core operations include both new pallet manufacturing and repair, so the same crew that builds new pallets also inspects and repairs used ones — they know where pallets fail.

Quality check. Every custom pallet is checked against the spec sheet before it leaves the shop. Dimension tolerance, fastener placement, and load rating are verified.

Custom Pallets for Export: ISPM-15 Compliance
If you ship internationally, your pallets need to meet ISPM-15 standards — the international phytosanitary standard for wood packaging. ISPM-15 requires heat treatment to kill pests and pathogens in the wood.
